Message from Senior Vice Presidents

As a leading business in the UK manufacturing and construction materials section, Tarmac is committed to playing a central role in making sure that our actions have a positive impact on the world around us.

Operating in a sustainable way is vital to securing the long-terms success of our business and we’re continually improving our environmental, social and economic performance. This includes everything from prioritising people’s health, safety and wellbeing and attracting, retaining and developing talented people to protecting and enhancing the natural environment, driving innovation in products and services and operating to the highest standards of corporate governance and ethics.

Our approach, by being the best at what we do – delivering for our customers and creating value for the Group’s shareholders. In this report we set out our activities and progress on our sustainability strategy, which is underpinned by four key priority areas of people, planet, performance and solutions.

We are pleased to have continued building our health and safety performance and are particularly proud to have received an achievement award from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). The award recognises the efforts of all at Tarmac to improving safety, health and wellbeing for employees and partners across the industry.

As part of our ongoing focus on attracting and developing new and diverse talent to the business we became the first UK company to launch a groundbreaking personal enrichment programme with national education charity SkillForce. This new partnership is helping young people to develop the skills, confidence and capabilities needed to enter professional employment.

2018 also saw us welcome 54 new graduates and apprentices to the business alongside a new learning and development advisor for early careers, a role created to provide dedicated support and guidance to our young leaders.

With over 400 sites across the UK, continually building strong relationships is key and our employees spent over 8,500 volunteering hours supporting local communities with a wide range of projects and activities. We’ve also worked closely with a range of partner organisations to protect and enhance the natural environment. A wide range of activities in 2018 included the reopening of Minera Quarry in North Wales as a wildlife reserve, planting thousands of trees at Tunstead in Derbyshire and supporting a new project in Somerset aimed at reversing the decline in breeding waders.

We’re continuing to make progress right across our business and supply chain, promoting a whole life cycle approach and designing CO2 out of products and services, and this year has seen the embedding of the ISO 50001 energy management standard. We’re also making ongoing strides in supporting and promoting the circular economy, eliminating waste and ensuring and resources remain in high value use for as long as possible. This has meant that in 2018 we used 8.7 million tonnes of waste and secondary materials from other sectors as raw materials in our products and as fuel for our manufacturing processes

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our employees, partners and External Sustainability Panel for their hard work and commitment to our sustainability initiatives in 2018 and we look forward to continued progress in the year ahead.
